Question 1: What is Aloha?
Answer 1: We wrote Aloha so that you could send and receive your AOL mail from your Newton.

>(although I wish there were a way to make the

This is something that AOL must change. Aloha does not have any control over it.

I do not make Aloha wait as long as the other clients during the connection phase when you are connecting to the 9600 baud and higher numbers so it speeds it up by a few seconds. The 2400 numbers need to be slowed down some so that is why there is the checkbox for <=2400 baud connections.

You can ftp Aloha from ftp.amug.org. The directory for the *.hqx version is /newton/communications. The directory for the *.zip version is /newton/submissions.
You can also ftp Aloha from newton.uiowa.edu. The directory for both versions is /submissions.
Oh yeah, you can download Aloha from eWorld too. (GO: Newton, and look in the new files folder)

This happens when you read an internet message that Aloha tries to split into multiple pieces. I will upload a fix for this a.s.a.p.

OK I downloaded Aloha and read the text read me. First question is at the end it said, if AOL changes its host protocols, then no refunds will be made. If I spend 50 bucks on a shareware program it better WORK. So if AOL changes its host protocols, does that mean we're all stuck and theres nothing we can do about it, except wait for another month or so until a fix comes out for an additional fee? Second question is, the Newton is portable right? Well I take my Newt on vacation, and I need a different access number so it won't cost a fortune in long distance calls, how can I get the local number without carrying around several sheets of paper with every access number in the US on it? It seems that Aloha works good, but when I spend $50 I want make sure that I'm getting my money's worth. With the bugs that appear in new shareware programs, I just want to make sure of what I will be getting into.

Mark,

This is a disclaimer. Aloha was based on the Mac AOL client and chances are that AOL will not drastically change the protocols without releasing an update to the Macintosh client. Even when this happens they will still have to support the old MAC AOL clients.
Aloha is adaptiable, but if AOL changes the protocols in such a way that Aloha can not handle it then a patch will be released which will modify Aloha to work again with AOL at no additional fee.
>how can I get the local number without carrying
>around several sheets of paper with every access

There are a number of ways. The first is to look in the online help of Aloha. Help->Prefs->Phone Numbers. There is a 800 number for SprintNet that you can call and get a local number in your current area code. Another way is that there is a NewtonBook of 1200 baud SprintNet numbers...(2400,9600,14000 numbers are available too but you must pay the registration fee first).

I've used a nice utility program called GeoAssist when I travel. It has a list of NewtonMail access numbers which, I believe, are mostly SprintNet access points. GeoAssist came a while back bundled on one of Apple's 2MB memory cards. It has the option of changing the NewtonMail phone number preference, but that doesn't automatically change Aloha (you'd have to copy the new number into Aloha).
Hope this helps,

A couple of basic questions about ALOHA?
How large a piece of e-mail can ALOHA download from AOL to the NEWTON? Is there a difference between whether the e-mail comes from an AOL person or from somewhere else on the internet?
Does ALOHA split the e-mail?
Is the downloaded e-mail a note?

Aloha works as advertised, and is a snazzy piece of software. The only drawbacks I see are:
* There isn't a button to extract mail to Notes
* It doesn't have a way to send to multiple people (yet?)
* It's a bit expensive at $50
* It doesn't properly reset the mailbox flag on AOL (when I log on after using Aloha, tells me I have new mail but no new mail).
I appreciate that it is smart enough to leave mail with attachments in my AOL box. It would be a nice option to have it leave all mail in the mail box (I'd like to be able to read my mail on my Newton, but still know I can easily access it from my Mac afterward).
I have a question too. Does the "Aloha 1.0" stamp at the end of mail I send go away if I register the program? I'm not sure the software is worth the price (for my needs), but I would like to know that that would be "fixed" if I did plunk out the cash.

After Aloha downloads messages from AOL they are automatically removed from the "incoming mailbox" on AOL.
(Attachments are left unread on AOL and sometime you will get a message that "this message is no longer available" and that message will stay unread on AOL)

Aloha can download the largest email that you can send to it from AOL or from the internet.
Aloha will split the email into pieces to try to keep the heap space usage low. The are prefixed
(1) my message
(2) my message
...
The downloaded e-mail is put into the inbox. You can copy the mail message from your inbox to the NotePad using a couple different mail utilities. Apple's NewtonMail Modules work best. (You can download these from AOL)

You can send to multiple people, but there is a limit to the number of people that you can send to. To send to multiple people you just have to separate their names on the "email address" line. For example: "HardyMacia, Kirke" will send it to both of us. The limit is 110 characters total for the subject and email address.
>* It's a bit expensive at $50
You can get upto a $10 discount but you need to read the ReadMe file.

I'm not sure about this. I've never had a problem with my AOL mailbox not being set correctly after using Aloha. I'll try checking into this.

After about a year of constant whining about how AOL doesn't support the Newton system, and how the unending litany of "I want AOL for my Newton" messages stating how much such support would be worth to them, Kirke offers his/her opinion that "It's a bit expensive at $50.00."
After two years of dog-like commercial Newton Packages like PresenterPad, Drawpad and DynoNote Pad that retail at the same "price point" yet have not corrected very basic problems, Hardy (in his quaint Vermonter way) produces an elegant piece of functioning work that satisfies an apparent crying need and is priced accordingly, AND has already released updates that deal with problems, and someone complains?
Where's AOL's version of Aloha? Where's the Microsoft offering? Has Apple supported AOL use? Just because a Newton "package" is physically small does not mean that it takes less effort to code. Perhaps the Newton community, which feels a crying need for such a package, should wait for Kirke's effort in that area...
T (of J and T, who doesn't use the Newton system for telecommunications and who pities Hardy for living up in the middle of nowhere, but who is in awe of his ability to detect a need and fullfill same and only ask for fair compensation for his efforts...)

I paid my registration the first day. Sure, I'd love it if it cost less. I'd love it if AOL provided a client for free, like they do for other platforms. But I can't fault Hardy for making a product there was a need for, and pricing it as he sees fit. That's the marketplace, folks, and the fact that a cheapescape like me forked over the dinero means that - at least in my case - Hardy's estimate of what his software's benefit is worth was pretty accurate.

Am I wrong or are most of the questions that have been asked thus far relate to the way the Newton handles the mail it recieves. For instance sending mail to multiple users or copying mail to the notepad are all things that should be taken care of by the Newton not Hardy's software. The only thing Aloha needs to do is get the mail from your AOL account to your Newton. How it is handled after that is up to Apple. Alot of the questions Hardy has answered thus far could have been can be answered simply by reading the Newton owners manual. Think of Aloha as a substitute for the onboard Newton mail client. Read your manuals...

Also, $50 (or $45 or $40) seems really cheap compared to the $120/year minimum you are paying for AOL, especially since it is Slick, functional, and not a time sink...

2.I get consistent -48205 errors. Is there a fix for this yet?
3.I also would strongly prefer that ALOHA give me an option to leave my mail as unread until I log on from my desktop. Especially while the code is still a little buggy.
4.I agree with others that Hardy has a right to charge whatever the market will bear; on the other hand, I'd bet the market would bear $25 or $30 a lot better!

I've emailed out version 1.01 of Aloha to most of the users who I have corresponded with. I will try to get it up on the ftp.amug.org site as soon as possible.
This fixes:
* This fixes the -48205 error when you are trying to send mail. The problem only happened in mail messages with bullets embedded in them.
* It frees up a little more memory.
* It replaces the "Aloha 1.0" with "sent via Aloha 1.01". This message can be turned off. I plan on releasing a separate little app or have another developer write an app that will let you create signatures for your mail. Similar to how many of the other mail programs work.
* The lenght of the subject + to email address has been fixed so that it allows 110 character headers instead of 55 character message.
* You will not get "please disconnect before power off" messages anymore. The Newton will not go to sleep until after all mail is sent/received.
* I do not think this fixes the -48404 error. I will work on that more later.

Let me just say that I didn't intend my comment at "$50 is a bit steep" to be a dig at Hardy. It was meant as a statement of my own opinion of Aloha's value to me and an estimate about the price elasticity of demand for the product. That is, I don't really have much of a need to collect my AOL e-mail "on the road," so $50 (actually it's only $45 if you follow his instructions and $40 if you have already registered something with him) isn't really worth it, to me, for an AOL mail client. Also, I expect that (and this is just a guess) Hardy might get more money if he asked for less. If priced lower it would be a nice alternative to LunaMail for those of us with both internet and AOL account. In my opinion, Aloha is much nicer than LunaMail.
Having said all that, it doesn't matter what I think. As I said before, it is a very nice piece of software and performs as advertised. Unfortunately, it is advertised as an AOL MAIL reader. Clearly it would be impossible for an outsider like Hardy to develop the true Newton AOL client that AOL should have written. That is, e-mail is only a tiny part of AOL's appeal. I want full AOL access from the Newton. It really burns me up that other PDAs have that built in and we have to settle for an ingenious third-party (partial) solution.

Thanks for the suggestions (seriously). I hadn't used e-mail on the Newton before Aloha, so I didn't realize what was part of the built-in mail system and what was Aloha.
Here's a little trick that I just figured out after flipping through the manual. You can use your Names app like AOL's Address Book to create mailing lists. For example, you could create a card in your Names app with "AOL gurus" as the name and put "HardyMacia, J and T, PDA Craig" in the e-mail section. Then you can send e-mail to "AOL gurus" and automatically have those three names pop up in the To: line. This is more useful with AOL names than with other internet addresses because of the limit of 110 characters in the To: line. If you have a few addresses with long domain names, this won't help you much.

Yes, Aloha works. And I'll probably buy it, but I have one pet peeve. Again, another $&^%*# mail package without a pulldown of local dial-in presets. In live in L.A.; between my house and my office I cross FOUR area codes, 310, 213, 818, and 805! And of course if I took a detour I could cross 714, 909, and maybe even 916 as well. NewtonMail drove me crazy with this until I found SKL's MailSaver, which is just perfect. Sure, I could keep the numbers in Names somewhere and paste them in. While the machine laughs at me, that is. If Aloha could also cut mail from the In-Box to the folder of my choice in the font of my choice, stripping headers along the way, the $50 would be on its way faster than a cat in a kennel!

Just to set the record straight, NONE of the PDAs with AOL have full access. The Magic Link is primarily a mail client, although you can also ask for news and stock reports. The Zoomer version is similar, except it can also get to the PDA Forum (that was not the case initially). The HP palmtops have no client--but they can run AOL's standard DOS software.
I've told AOL repeatedly that they should not only expand the number of handheld platforms supported, but they should offer greater access to the system.
That is the question! Will a future version of Aloha present the user with a list of New Mail and provide the option of whether or not to read it? Also, would it be possible for Aloha to allow forwarding of mail, and saving mail as unread after opening it? In other words, will future Aloha users be given the same functions that we currently have in the AOL mailbox? :D

Just thought I would mention that I purchased the Newton Enhancement Pack by Starcore and and find that it "completes" the Newton (as Apple should have). The Pack consists of a 2 MB Apple storage card which comes loaded with complete versions of Graffiti, Action Names and Agenda, and Newton utilities all for the cost of a 2MB memory card alone! The Graffiti hand writing recognition system works like Apple's should work but doesn't. I find it 100% accurate and it only takes about 20 minutes to learn.
The Action Names and Agenda integrates the Newton scheduler and Names filer database together to make both much more useful. The Utilities also seem to have some useful functions (although I have yet to fully investigate that package). With all three programs loaded, you still have almost 1.4MB left in the flash card for data. I Highly reccommend it.
Now a question for you Newton experts:
Suppose I'm visiting a client and have been taking copious notes at a meeting with my Newton/Graffiti. After the meeting, someone says "I'd like a copy of the notes you took, but I don't want a hard copy from the printer, I want a text file uploaded to my computer." --- O.K. How can one do this simple task without the Newton Connection computer software. Apple seems to have thought of every contingency for I/O except this one. Or am I missing something?
Thank you for your help.

George Graves

I have a Newton 100. I also been having trouble with the decoding of incoming e-mail. There was an earlier mention of a patch. Aloha 1.01 - I believe. When will it posted to ftp.amug.org. I would like to buy the product, but not till it is fully functional.

I've yet to get Aloha to work. When there's no mail, it says there is, and then produces with a -48205 while "decoding." Today, I tried again. There was an Internet message waiting. Aloha tried to retrieve it. After 'reading message 1 of 1' for two minutes (I'm initially patient), I stopped and disconnected. The message in the Inbox says there was an error, and I'd have to check mail already read with the real AOL software.
This is with Aloha 1.01.
After hearing success of others, I blindly emailed my registration fee when I initially installed. Still waiting for something to work.

Although I had initial success with the new 1.01 version of Aloha, I have since found that I am experiencing that same -48205 error, along with a -48200 error which follows shortly thereafter.
A minute or two after receiving the -48200 error, my Newton performed a spurious reboot. This is something my Newton has never previously experienced.
There appears to be major insects lurking within this program that I'm sure will require yet another increment in revision.
Please help.
BTW, I have a pretty "stock" Newton MP 120 with 2meg RAM. The only extras used are Pocket Quicken, Shortcuts and the Memory and Software Managers that come with Newton Utilities.

Those of you getting the error... perhaps you can post exactly what other programs you have on your Newton.
I've never run into the errors using a 120 and 2 meg card that has all sorts of junk on it.
Have you tried installing the NewtonMail Modules and Inbox Expander as Hardy recommends?
How did the author of Aloha get the protocols from AOL in order to send and receive mail. Did he get it by watching what the AOL software does over the serial line or does AOL now plublish the codes somewhere? What are the chances of getting a copy of AOL's protocol? Could someone send a copy to CE software so that we can finaly get a QuickMail client for AOL?

I keep getting the -48205 error message. I get it:
1. when downloading AOL mail
2. when sending AOL mail (sometimes)
3. when getting email from the internet (sometimes)
I do have the inbox expander installed and the newton mail modules.
As for other applications, they are all archived with Newtcase v1.1.
Also I have to reset a whole lot, especially since I've never had to do it before, and I used HeapIt for the Heap.
Does anyone know where I can find version 1.01, I was going to send in my registration money but I started to get all these problems. Please I WANT to send Hardy my money for such a great package, but I really would like it to work(without having to reset so much and to get my mail intact).

The problem with the errors may be that you are running programs from an archived version. I have had similar errors with NewtCase 2.1 (a nice upgrade) and other programs (not Aloha) that use a lot of heap or such. Are you running it from and unarchived version?

I use in on a ram card (1meg) all the time. The only soup, that I'm aware of, is the InBox soup. So, without InBox Expander, all mail is stored internal. Aloha, like most other programs, does keep it's prefs (ph#,username . . .) in the System Soup.

Sure, just use Scroll Extras or other package mover apps. - I've done it. No need to worry about the soups.

Where is the latest version of Aloha? I think Hardy sent it to me - but I can't find it. I looked at a couple FTP sites - but I'm not sure what version they have. Maybe someone could send it to me? I think I need the bullet fix that the latest version has.
Also, I've had some cases where Aloha seems to hang on sending message - anyone else have that happen. It seems to be happening a lot this evening - not sure if it's a fluke or it's going to become a way of life.

The "hang" on sending this evening may be your local node or AOL. At peak times, the system can get a bit backlogged (ever get a "For some reason, the host has failed to respond" dialog). IF that's the case, Aloha *may* hang simply because it's waiting for AOL. I'm not sure what Hardy does about the dialog IF it tries to send to the Newt.
I will be uploading 1.02 to these sites later today.

I was thinking about buying a Newton 100 since they're only $199.00 mail order these days. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's worth it. Is there a really big difference between the Newton 100 and the Newton 120?
Also, I was hoping to use the Newton to take fairly extensive notes during lectures that I attend. Is this possible on the Newton 100 (or 120)?
Is there a difference in the handwriting recognition capabilities in the two versions?
Can anyone point me to any good articles comparing the two? (or even just a good review of the either one)

I think this is a bug that sneaked into 1.02. It seems that if you send mail and you have mail to receive it will get the mail list decode it and then not download any of the mail. I'm planning on releasing a 1.03 tomorrow and I'll fix this bug at the same time.

Last night I tried 3x to send a simple 1 page text email and was not able to do so. Ahola would "hang" on the send. No freeze, just a hang like it was waiting for a handshake or something. This was on a MP120 using Aloha v1.0 with Apple PCMCIA faxmodem. This morning I sent the message successfully. I wonder if the problem was one with saturated activity on AOL, or even the PCMCIA modem. I had seen problems like this with LunaMail.
In fairness, I just realized that I had archived most of my Newton mail module patches. However, I don't see how that could have affected sending 1 message.
Still Aloha seems much better behaved and requires less resources and configuration than LunaMail.

Sometimes heavy AOL or SprintNet usage will hang Aloha. If you try it again if a few minutes it usually connects. You might want to try an alternate number also.
Archiving the NewtonMail modules will not affect Aloha. (It might actually be better for Aloha because you will have freed up some heap space)

I've found that one of the best uses for aloha is use aol to subscribe to an internet mailing list, an active one such as the one for SYBASE databases, and then dial up and download some interesting reading into my newton. However at 2400bps I've spent close to 15 minutes downloading my mail at least 2 times( and I haven't had the software for long). So that adds up to more than a half hour of on-line time. My question is: Is my AOL account being properly charged? I love the software, but being loyal to the spirit of the on-line world I would have to stop using it if it turns out I'm ripping AOL off.
Thank you and great job on the software.

You are getting charged for the time online when downloading Internet mail lists. AOL does "see" Aloha and starts your meter once you're past the password stage.
Yes, your AOL account gets charged for the time that you are connected with Aloha.
Aloha takes a long time to decode a lot of messages especially from the internet because it also decodes the header information. When the new version of the Newton ToolKit is released I will, hopefully, release a new version of Aloha that has the decompiling function compiled and will be much faster than the current version. So, your 15 minute connect sessions might only be 5 minutes.

The 1-800 SprintNet information number is in the Aloha Help screen. (Help->Prefs->Phone Number). You can call and get a local access number thru that number.
If GeoAssist has the list of SprintNet numbers then you will have an reasonable chance of success. NewtonMail, AOL, and eWorld all use the SprintNet network as their main network to connect. (They also use alternate networks such as Tymnet, but tymnet is not supported by Aloha)

Matthew,
There is nothing "evil" or underhanded, or even untypical, about this. ALL online services claim a compilation copyright on message postings. If I understand it correctly, you still hold rights to what you post, but certainly not what I or others post. If any individual started selling these posts (or other information in the forum) for profit, it would violate AOL's compilation copyright AND the individual copyrights. It also would violate TOS. AOL DOES allow you to copy messages and other works here for your own personal use (unless there is some indication to the contrary on the material).
If I were to post CIS or eWorld messages here without permission, or distribute them for sale, it would be the same type of copyright violation AND a violation of their terms of service. I have yet to encounter a commercial service that doesn't claim rights to the content.

When I checked mail from Aloha at work today, I got 1 of 3 messages in it's entitity, and the next 2 came through as just a line saying "That mail is no longer available or is not accessible to this account."
Does this message come from Aloha or from AOL, and what does it indicate? (other than that the text didn't make it to the Newton) 8-{)
The 2 unreceived messages weren't especially long when I checked them from my PC at home.

Chances are good that you will not see this for a very long time. I think I can probably do it, but I have other projects that need more of my time now than adding new features to Aloha.
I will be adding the ability for you to use multiply accounts via Aloha, but this is the only item on the upcoming drawing boards.

This message is generated by AOL because Aloha is not sending it the correct message id of the message to download. I'm still looking into this problem. It happens randomly. I can download 50 messages and then the 51st message id might be incorrect.

I noticed that one at least one of the 2 messages I received that the address was cut off after the 16th character. I'm not sure about the second one - It may have been exactly 16 characters long.
Both messages were there when I logged in from the PC.
So even if Aloha doesn't get the messages, it does tell me there's mail to look at later. That's helpful, and it works much quicker than the PC. (And I don't have AOL at work anyway.)

And earlier messages that stated it was available on eWorld were incorrect, or their software search system doesn't work.

If you try to get on AMUG and are unsuccessful, there is generally an alternate address offered that will work - something with a 2 or 3 in it. I've gotten on several times in just this fashion, and have downloaded 1.03 from same just yesterday. Keep trying, and make sure that you have the utility to strip off all of that Internet hqx stuff - DeHQX-2.01 is available here on AOL - use the filesearch with DeHQX to find it.

My email isn't working right now on AOL for some strange reason. They are fixing it. But, perhaps you could email me some test message and I could email it back to you, and you can see what I mean (tomorrow - when my email works again - hopefully).
I'm betting it's the modem and intend to call apple soon, but thought I'd ask here first in case there was a known problem.

I'm hoping to convince AOL to let me post Aloha soon. They are not testing it--with rapid growth, Web browsers, new tools and features, there is more than Quality Assurance can keep up with now.
I don't see AOL doing its own version for Newton anytime soon.
I have seen a rumour that when AOL sold the software to Apple which they use with e-world that there was also an agreement that AOL would not support e-mail for the Newton so that e-world would get those customers.

Oh? I was under the impression that the setting of this preference was dependent on the speed of the access number you're calling. I've used it with the "official" (2400) Newton external without checking the box (but using the high-speed access number) with no problem. I did, however, have to check it when calling the 2400 BPS number.

Phun 1 you are CORRECT. This preference only deals with the access number you call - if you are dialing a 2400 baud access number you should check this pref. if not don't bother!

2400 baud and lower numbers connect to a different machine that the faster baud numbers. So, checking the <=2400 mode tells Aloha which machine to connect to.

Aloha + Modem Card on MP100 is possible.
Aloha.pkg is 105k, but it is stored compressed on the Newton so Aloha only takes up 65k.
So, if you have 100k free internally on your MP100 you should not have a problem connecting and downloading and uploading a few mail messages.

The current reasoning of why you can only use one screen name is I implemented the basic stuff first.
I do plan on releasing a version that will allow you to use multiple screen names, but I currently do not have the time to work on implementing the multiple screen names. It is not a simple change...I need to do a little bit more programming to get it to work smoothly.

When opening "mail you've read," as soon as you see the mail you want (in this case, your last Aloha mailing), hit apple-period. This will cause the list to stop right where it is. You can then open and forward the mail already listed on your screen without waiting for the entire list to scroll.

* fixes rare -48205 error when decoding mail
* fixes rare "message is available" errors. You should get all your messages now.
* fixes -48402 error that was caused by not have the subject or to who field filled in the email address slip. If you do not the fields filled in then it will not send it.
* adds a Signature field
* gives you the option of turning off the "Sent via Aloha"...if you really want to.
* still untested, but I think it will fix the problem some people are having trying to dial out on phones that you need to dial a 9 first.

What I do for prefixes because at my home I need to dial *70 and my other work location I do not need to dial the prefix is the following.
1. Enter "*70,555-1234 @home" in the phone field and tap <>phone "Add to Popup".

I just got Aloha 1.04 yesterday (thanks Hardy), and am pretty new with Newtons, but found it pretty easy to use. I've had absolutely no problems sending and receiving mail so far that's just plain old text, and so far no errors either (I'm using a 120). For anyone unsure of using the program, I feel it's pretty clear, and all I've done is read through the other questions and so forth. As I said, I'm pretty new with using Newtons, until now, I just played Solo and had a cool way of storing names. This really opens things up for me, as I almost sold my 120 at one point. I also had no problems with registering and emailing Hardy w/ my name card, things went very smoothly, thanks again Hardy for your work with Newtons and making them actually useful.

I'm on the verge of getting 1.04 (first I have to get an external modem). I tried 1.0 and noticed that it only works with SprintNet access. AOL's upcomming 800 number access would be a godsend for Aloha. The problem is that the number is AOLNet. Will 1.04 work? How much effort would it take to add AOLNet access?
If you say "yes", you'll get my money immediately.
Please send me a demo copy of Aloha 1.04. I'll send my shareware fee as soon as I try it on my MP100. Thanks in advance.

I can't say yes to the AOLNet support yet. I will first have to try it and see what it will take. If there is enough interest I'm sure that Aloha will support AOLNet if it does not take a major re-write.

A .hqx file is a binhex file--it is most likely the zip archive binhex'd so it can be sent as text.
Use keyword QUICKFINDER, search on BINHEX, and download one of the binhex utilities. It will decode the file down to what it really is--hopefully the zip archive which you can decompress and load.

Do these come through the same via Aloha, or do they get mapped to something completely different?

The type of characters that you describe can be produced on a Message Pad (use the keyboard and tap "Shift" and "Option", then the "8" key to get the degree symbol, for example), but Aloha cannot transmit them as the text editor here on AOL isn't set up to deal with them. I tried to send messages with ellipsis (Option-; on the Newton system) and was constantly presented with error messages.

Something like:
Add All Topic _
From left to right: plus/minus, Micro, Degrees, and that underline should have been an 'O' with a diagonal line across it. Apparently the font AOL is using doesn't support that character, so it maps to an underscore.
I'm a Quality Control inspector at work, and I do machining and electronics in my home workshop, so I use these symbols a lot for expressing tolerances and abbreviating component values, etc. The 'O' with a line stands for 'Diameter' in machine shop terminology.
So I guess its really a case of BP. (Smiley with glasses and tongue hanging out.) You know, that reminds me of Dogbert from the Dilbert comic strip.... 8-{) [<- yours truly, with glasses and moustache]

The following is an interesting response from Hardy Macia regarding the possibility of adding a "keep as new" option to Aloha.
>>>Tony,
I'll look into keeping all messages marked as New for Aloha the next version of Aloha. ( ? 1.2 ? )
Hardy<<<
I note that this would be a very useful function for me, as I only check mail away from home once a day and prefer that all my mail is still "new" when I get home so that a flashsession will save it all to disk automatically.
Looking through all the posts in this folder, the same suggestion was offered in the past.
Hardy continues to improve on this software boon for the AOL's Newton users. Wonderful! I look forward to the new version!

I read your article: "Mac user's guide to working with HP Palmtops", but now I'm reconsidering my purchase plans.
I thought I was going to have to resign myself to buying a HP because IT linked to AOL. IT also had a longer battery life, smaller size, a keyboard, and a cross of all the pluses from the Wizard to the Magic Link.
Now Aloha tilts the scale again. I thought that resigning myself to an HP wasn't so bad because I could learn and access Dos material on the road (the predominant platform in my circles), however, just reading the literature to get up to speed has me wishing for the good ole mac interface--I think I'd rather just wait for a mac program for PDA's that reads or runs Dos stuff like a mac.
Anyhow, if Aloha will let me send email to a newton then I could access files from my desktop on the road as well as messages that I or friends send.
I've considered Zaurus, HP 200Lx, Magic Link and Newton, even Marco. I'm so undecided; everyone's opinion is welcome. I'd much rather stick with an Apple product because of integration and familiarity, but it seems the competition has arguably been out front. Whoever invented Aloha gets a kudo.

I'd been ready to dump my Newton altogether, but the aquisition of Aloha turns it into a considerably more useful device for me.

I have a question that's peripherally related to using Aloha.
I've been creating Name Cards for some Internet sites (agora@mail.w3.org, ftpmail@census.gov, etc.). When I'm preparing an outgoing message, I try and do a "Find" in Names for the "@" symbol, but I always get, "Not found in Names" back - even though I have probably half a dozen cards which contain the "@" character.
Do you happen to know if this failure to find the "@" symbol is a Newton bug, or if the system is designed to search only for "normal" letters?
I note that when I'm in Notes and I do a "Find" for "@", I get the usual "Compiling list of found items" message, and then the usual overview, with "Notes, 2 items" in boldface at the top of the overview. However, that's all. The items are not listed.
Does anybody have the full scoop on this? Thanks in advance for any replies.

The notes will not find "@" in the middle of words. So if you have "hardy@catamount.com" in the Notes or Names it will not find it. Find only works with words that start like "abc..." It does not look inside of words for the strings. But, Newton does seem to break words on periods so you could search for all "com" assuming a majority of email adresses end in .com or .edu

I don't know how many users have cc:mail by Lotus but I have figured out how to have it forward mail to my AOL account which I can then access with Aloha - anyone who wants specifics can email me.

In the amount of time it takes AOL 2.0 to load, then dial the phone, then wait for the menus to appear, I can uncase the Newton, swap out the Flashcard for the Modem, log in and get the mail, and be happily writing the response....
And I only have a 2400 Baud Modm in the Newton, whereas the PC allegedly runs at 14.4K!

Okay Craig - didn't want to jam the newsgroup with a lot of information that may only apply to a few people. This is how I have been able to forward my company cc:mail to AOL and then download it via Aloha.
I have set this up with cc:mail 2.0. The only prerequisite is that your e-mail must be configured so you can send e-mail through the internet. Some systems may just limit you to sending through your own network so this obviously wouldn't work. This is something your cc:mail administrator can help with.
First - you have to prepare a message which defines your AOL address - for example, I created a message with the subject "Forward to AOL" with my AOL address - Obywan@aol.com. You then save that message as a DRAFT message. Go to the message menu - select "save draft".
Then - go to the rules list (ctrl+L) and create a new rule. I have it set to run "when receiving new messages in in-box" - I have NOT defined any conditions - although you can specify that only messages with certain subjects, or from certain people will be affected. The action - "forward current message using addresses from draft message 'Forward to AOL'"
That is all there is to it. I had to create the draft message because our system would not accept a specific internet address any other way. So I used the draft to define my AOL address.
One important thing - you must have your cc:mail running for this to work. I used it over this last weekend (July 4th) and received several messages with no problem - but I did have to leave my work computer on with cc:mail running. Any messages you receive will be forwarded - and a copy will remain on your system although it will be marked as read. Also, at least on our system, you do get a lot of extra info on the messages in the form of routing information etc. in headers and footers. No big deal however. Heck, I even got receipts from our system after a message was sent to AOL! This makes aloha indispensible to me - Hardy the check is in the mail!! :)
Hope this is helpful to some.
Courage!

I often get "unable to connect " message and thought something was wrong with my modem or phone cord, then when I turned the modem volume on, I realized that the line either wasn't picking up or was busy. As I much prefer keeping the modem volume off, can the connect messages be more specific? Like a "no answer" or "busy" message in addition to the "check modem connection" message?

I don't think this is a problem with Aloha, more likely a quirk in the Newtonmail system:
I got a mailing off internet the other day, and Aloha split it in 2 segments. It was very hard to read in the mail editor, so I copied the text to Notes. I got a message that said the note was too long and a new note had been created. The tail end of the second segment vaporised.
Anyone else seen something like this?

OK I've got it to work. Must have been a typo in the account name.
In an attempt to get Aloha to work I removed all the other software. This didn't work so I tried to restore it but ran into a problem which force me to reload my packages. When I entered the preferences in Aloha and tried to sign on it worked.
When I was having the problem, Aloha wouldn't let me try to sign on using just my screen name "zanaberry" unless I added "@aol.com". Aloha would give me an error message that said my name or password was blank.
I guess I had a blank space in front of my account name that didn't erase. Thanks for the help.

The -48809 error is an "Undefined Method" error--could be you have a soup from some other trashed package, or part of Aloha in two places. You might find the problem with a soup utility. Or, if you don't have any valuable data on the card, try reformatting it and see if Aloha works with the card. I use a 120/2meg with a card w/o any problem.

Dear Hardy,
This time I wrote down the error message and it is -48807. When I wrote you personally I thought it was from internet mail since that is all I had tested Aloha on since I registered it.
Now I've tried to get your aol response to my message plus some internet mail via Aloha. I've tried at least 10 times with my Motorola Power PCMCIA card and 5 times with the Apple Modem and I always get the -48807 error as soon as Aloha starts to download the first message.
The strange thing is that Aloha 1.1 worked fine on both modems before I registered! I did a lot of experimenting with shareware between the success and failure, some I've kept/registered, most I erased.
Any luck with the error problem when you were in Boston?

With some help from an affected user, I've tracked down the -48807 problem that some of you have been having downloading email with Aloha.
The error is caused by an incompatibility with Quickies. I haven't tried narrowing down the problem any further. Can't be done on one phone call. I've been asked many times to move the phone and account prefs to the main screen so you have better access to them and I will do this in version 1.2 as soon as I have a chance.

While connecting, it will sometimes (not very often) get hug up in the connecting... state. In general, it has been *excellent* for send/receive email!
I'm glad you're going to add tymenet/aolnet support. I'm willing to help out with the native newton data transport section :)
Two more clarifications/wants. For those of us with multiple account names, would it be possible to some how indicate a set of names to check (even if you have to dial the phone multiple times :) ) and to indicate which name should be used to send email under.
Also, AOL or Sprint supports the "find local number" option, which calls an 800 number to fetch a list of local access numbers. Boy would I like that.
Thanks, Hardy, for the cool program and great support. If there is any way I can help let me know.

That is because Aloha doesn't handle that case yet. I've been trying to figure it out, but I'm never at the right place at the right time.

That's tough to do because I'm using NewtonMail to handle the message creation and editing. So, I don't have much control over who the message is sent by. I'm not sure if 2.0 will handle this yet either, but I'll look into it.

One thought would be to "hide" all the out box soup entries that don't correspond to the current connect-ee when connecting. Maybe you could add a small floater for email creation so that we can designate/select the AOL userid to send the email as. If we do select one, you create an extra slot for the entry with the user tag, if we dont it gets sent on the first connect (like it does now)

I had the same problem. Aloha downloaded from AOL worked for only 48 hours, and when I deleted it and reloaded from the AMUG, it was still timed out. (must have missed a soup or two).
The package is worth while though!

Aloha is not available in the AOL libs, but can be downloaded off of the internet:
You can find the latest version of Aloha at AMUG (ftp.amug.org) and on UIOWA (newton.uiowa.edu). You can use keyword FTP to reach those areas.
I recently loaded the Aloha package into my Newton 120 and when I launched it the screen came up that had the "send mail" and "receive mail" check off boxes in it but nothing happend for about 30 seconds afterward. So, I tried to close it and discovered that the Newton was locked up. I then tried to reset but now all I get is a completely dark screen which won't turn off except by removing the batteries. The startup screen doesn't appear.
I've a feeling that something truly awful has happend to my MP. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If the screen is dark, did you accidentally adjust the contrast? If so, try that first. Next, you could try a cold boot. Press and hold the Reset button, while doing that press and release the power switch. When the screen comes up and says do you want to delete everything TAP NO. That should correct most problems. After that a call to 1800 SOS-APPL might be in order.

It is impossible for software to damage a newton. If you have a backup, the complete reset described in the tips section should clear the newton (erasing all memory, hence the need for the backup) and correct whatever problem you might be having. The problem with your approach (which is certainly legal and above board) is that the "copy protection" scheme used by Hardy and others relies on the interaction between your user's name on the Newton device and a code that they send you upon receipt of your shareware fee. Unless you want to rename your Newton device to something like Philo T. Farnsworth, using someone else's copy, even if bought and paid for, just won't work...

I don't think AOL has changed their message format to keep Aloha away. Aloha hanging on the ignoring headlines message is a bug in Aloha where Aloha can't decide what to do with the data coming from AOL in certain circumstances. I haven't been able to narrow this bug down to fix it though. Usually waiting a 20 minutes and trying again Aloha will work.

You may want to look in the "submissions" directory for the latest version. If you are using a version of AOL with a web browser, you can get the latest version directly from Hardy's home page:
http://www.together.com/~hardy/
A "name card" is simply a Newton Names card with *your* information filled in. You should make one of these anyway, so you can beam it to other Newton-Enabled folks. If you install the new version, you can get the 7 day trial again, so send out the card first thing, and then use registerIt to send your shareware fee :)

Hardy,
While 1.1 is very capable, I'm looking forward to some of the new features of Aloha 1.2 (or is that 2.0 :) )
The "biggies" I'd like are:
- login name/access number pickers on the main screen, instead of buried in "prefs"
- support for AOLnet and/or tymnet (AOLnet preferable for me, and probably most everyone else)
- reduction in package size by moving "help" into a newton book (so only Aloha needs to be installed internally, and the help book can be on a card)
What's the timeframe? I'm sure you're busy at the new job, but is this somthing we can hope to see "soon"?

I would like to try Aloha, but seems you need to download (?) software and then do something and something else before you can get the software..... Is Aloha not available commercially? Seems making it difficult to obtain simply spawns copying. I have bought other software such as QFPro, and think its great and won't 'share' with anyone. If anyone knows how to do these 'downloads' of this and that please let me know. Simply knowing that it must be done is not enough. There is too much left up to the imagination for non-hacker types. Where are the directions about how to do it? Improving this area would undoubtedly help software authors sell their products.

BinHex for PCs is available right here in the PDA Forum--look in our General/Utilities library. It is near the top. There are also Mac binhex utilities, although Stuffit Expander is the easiest to use.
In fact, the Windows Expander will unencode files, so you might just download that utility.

The reason it's not very easy to get Aloha, relative to other files here in the AOL library, is that AOL won't allow Hardy to place Aloha in the Library (some messy details like violation of the TOS :) )
Since AOL has web and ftp access, you can get Aloha from the "usual places" on the internet. As craig says, it's all in the keyword PDA, "What's Hot..." area. "Surfing the Net" via the AOL web browser is not bad as link as you are connecting to AOL at 14.4 or faster, and you have the latest AOL software. If non of that makes any sense, then wait for Hardy to email you a copy :)

A little knowledge...
The Mac file system has what you would call "smart files". They contian not only the data, but information about which app created them, and which app should be used on them, and what their icon is. This is why a Mac user can double-click a data file and have the correct application launch & edit it. How do they do this magic? They have two "forks" (or sections) for each file, the Data fork, which has the data in it, and the resource fork, which has the special stuff in it. Additionally, there are file flags that contain some of the owner information. When a Mac file is copied into a non-Mac operating system, the flags (and sometimes the resource fork) are lost, leaving only the data. This loss of important information lead to the use of text encodeing schemes like BINHEX. Binhex simply converts a file into textual representations of all the binary data (Hexidecimal values, represented as text, hence bin-HEX). A Mac user can receive a BINHEX file via Email, FTP, or AOL, and simply de-binhex it to get a fully "Mac frendly" file with all the resource info and flags intact. For a WinTel user, most of the resource/flag information is useless, so a Windows/DOS deBinHexer simply discards that information when converting the text file back into binary data.
Happy Computing!

The help book is separate. The package size is about 35k.
AOLnet will be supported (I haven't implemented it yet, but it should be done for the release)
>login name/access number pickers on the main screen,
Yes. It's in there.
You can also send email for just one account at a time. It won't try to send all of your mail from the account you log in from. Each mail message knows what account it belongs to.

For those of us who have already paid the $50 (or $45 wth discount for Aloha 1.1) why do we have to pay an additional $10 to upgrade???? That means we are paying $60 all up for the product when you are selling it to those who do not have it for $50. This isn't an Aloha topic, but I can help you with putting pictures on the Newton. I've got a few things you can try out: Newton Movie Player, Newton Slide Show, PALMEDIA Player (almost - it's in beta right now).
You can search the libraries for "Newton Moon" and find the packages mentioned above, or you can visit my WWW page:

and download them from there.
Hope this helps,

John,
The reasons for the upgrade fee are...
1. I need the new revenue to pay for the multiple trips to CA which were required to learn NOS 2.0,
2. the Newton associates program fees,
3. the advertising,
4. my time spent writing 2.0 for the NOS 2.0, and
5. it is not just a compatibility upgrade it is also an enchancement upgrade.
There is only one person who does not need to pay an upgrade fee and that is for screen name RGGOP. He won a copy of Aloha in Jepordy, but he doesn't even own a Newton yet.

I have been playing around with Aloha 2.0 on my Newton (with 2.0 OS) and for some reason it refuses to show email it has downloaded. It goes through all the steps in dialing, connecting, etc... it correctly identifies how many pieces of mail there are, and proceeds to download, and once it is done-voila, no email. Hmm...
It has been making a couple of beeps when it finishes (like the ones from Lunar Lander)-does that signify anything?
I hope I am just doing something stupid, because this software does look useful and well integrated with the new operating system. Now if I could just get it to work... sigh.

Hardy (and all):
I've been having similar problems, with Aloha logging in, reading the mail index, and then disconnecting -- sometimes after downloading the first (and *only* the first) of multiple messages, and sometimes downloading nothing at all. A subsequent AOL desktop session then confirms that messages were there waiting to be downloaded, but without result on the Newton. Unlike previous posters, I don't think that Aloha is downloading and "losing" them, I just think it's failing to download them in the first place.
As far as I can tell, this has happened with both AOLnet and SprintNet connections. I don't think there's anything strange about my config (2.0 is too new to load up with a bunch of junk), and I'm pretty sure my Aloha prefs are the way they should be (unless the "strip Internet headers" setting, which I'm using, is creating the problem). It appears that this may be more of a problem with long messages, such as mailing list postings of 20K-30K, which Aloha 1.1 used to break up into segments without any problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jay Austin

Another strangeness is that even if I use the "Leave on AOL" option, the message is gone from AOL (but I can still see it if I "Check Mail You've Read").

OK, here's my new theory: Hardy is right that the "no mail downloaded" problem has something to do with heap space. In fact, immediately after installing and trying to use 2.01 (my thanks also for the quick rewrite!) I got the new warning box saying that my free heap was < 40K. I started a session anyway, and had the exact same problem.
I took Hardy's advice, froze *all* my packages (less than 10, by the way), and rebooted. Got the exact same message about lack of free heap, which left me *much* more frustrated by Apple than by Aloha. Ran the session anyway, and this time it worked fine, including a proper download and segmentation of a very long mail message (first time that had worked for me).
Later, trying to figure out what was hogging heap on my now-stock Newton 120, I realized that I have had the Dates application set to background during this whole ordeal. Could it be that it takes more heap in the background than Notes? Switched back to Notes, and ran another session, which also went fine and did *not* generate the warning box.
Too early to say if this solves the problem, but it's worth a try. I'd love to know if other users reporting the bug also have had the background app set to something other than Notes.
LOL,
Jay Austin

Dates is a real heap user (compared to notes).
Technobable follows:
Notes usually has one or two entries open in a single soup for its display. Also, there are not as many views needed to generate the display. In other words, unless you have an ink note visible the heap usage by Notes is only about 5-8kb.
Dates has 4 soups, and you may have entries from all 4 "active" on a day display. Even more is used by the other views. Furthermore, the display in Dates is much more complex (many views are created for the month, date, day, crib notes, etc.) The result is that Dates can use over 20kb of heap when open, depending on how busy you are.
You only have about 70kb of heap free after a reset, and you lose about 20kb after you've been thru the extras drawer, names, dates, and IOBox once. If you're running Notes as your background, you should have around 50-55kb heap free.
Technobable ends.
Rant mode on:
Why after 3 years is heap still a problem? WHY? I really wish they'd fix this. PLEASE!!! Just give us another 40kb of heap! Grrrr! The heap under 2.0 is FIXED at 160kb. Why not fix it at 200 instead? Why run "on the edge" when you could have a lot of headroom? More free heap = faster speed. I'd have 100kb of heap free instead of 60, and I'd love to have it....
Thanks, I feel better :)

Aloha, is a program for Newton messagepads (and expertpads, and marco's) that will allow you to send and reciew AOL e-mail. (It will be like the way sending Newtonmail is now, only it will go through AOL). I believe it requires OS 1.3 or later (so if you have an unupgraded 0MP, it will not work. Otherwise it will).
You can get it from Hardy's (author) WWW page.
Go to the main Newton screne. then go to the Newton WWW sites area.
It will be called either Catamount Software, or Hardy Marcia's WWW Page.
Go there, and click on the link to the file.
(This is assuming that you have WWW access)
If you don't have WWW access, then, tell me, because I will have to dig up the FTP site that it is on. WWW is easier.
Unfortunatly, it is not in the file libraries on AOL, because the AOL Brass, well, I won't say, but, it goes against their policy to have 3rd party AOL software.
As you can see, no one is happy at the fact that they don't allow it. Oh well...
Hope this helps...

The main drawback for me with either eWorld or Aloha for remote email gathering is that my main email address is an internet address, and neither eWorld or AOL can access that mail. Or so I thought...
Turns out, it's quite simple. All you need to do is:
1) if you have FTP access to your account/site, upload a text file called ".forward" (without the quotes). Inside the file have one line of text -- the full internet address (i.e. user@aol.com) you want your mail forwarded to.
or
2) ask your provider to perform step 1.
Now, anytime I'm leaving the office for any length of time I just upload the file and collect my mail with the Newton through eWorld (would also work with Aloha/AOL). When I get back, I rename the file to something innocuous...
Sorry to those for whom this is old news, but for me it was a revelation...

Hi, I am going to Sweden on a few days and thought it would be nice to use my Newton and Aloha to get my mail. I checked here on AOL for the AOLGlobalnet access numbers and sure enough, they had a 28.8 connection for Sweden. I thought I should try it out and the best way I could think of was actually dialing the # in Sweden after setting the preferences to Aolnet-alterantive. It did not work but told me that the connection had "given up" or something to that effect.

Hardy,
I used stuffit expander (with "never" boxes checked in the cross platform setup) to expand Aloha202.hqx. Both Aloha and Register loaded properly. However, when I load either one individually on my internal storage and backup only the internal storage and packages, I get a -1 error message and a disconnect. I have managed to get a good internal backup using NBU for windows and when I erase the package (I have loaded them one at a time with the same results) I can again successfully get a good internal backup. I have yet to get a complete backup on the card because of a -1 error message followed by a disconnect as well. The only package that will not backup on my card appears to be MailTime. Since it came with my updated 120 I don't want to erase it unless I can get a replacement. I also noticed MailTime is designed to work with Aloha. Just a guess, but it appears there might be a problem with NBU for Windows and Aloha related packages causing -1 error messages. Any thoughts? I haven't tried Aloha202 yet but will give it a shot to see if it is working properly.
Thanks

I tried Aloha once today, but, there was a weird connection error. I didn't try it again, so, it could just be the normal sprintnet "we are holier than god" so we won't connect problem ;-)
I will try again after I sleep a while ;-)

Hardy,
Tried reloading Aloha 2.02 and backing up my 120 using NBU for Windows (the final version not a beta). I still get a -1 error message followed by a disconnect. Also tried to connect to AOL. Everything seems to work ok to the point I get the message "connected at 2400" (I am using the Newton external modem) and then my 120 freezes. I can't stop the connection by tapping stop. I have to manually disconnect and reset my 120 to get it working again. Any ideas?

I used aloha for the first time over this weekend. When I first tried to get my messages, I got a message from aloha (after it connected) saying "Ignoring HEaders" .. and then it didn't actually download any of the messages in my in box.
Now too be fair, i had *several hundred* messages in my in box (I belong to a few listservs, and I hadn't deleted old stuff for a while....
...I logged on with my PC and deleted a *ton* of stuff (so I only had 5 messages left) and aloha worked fine.
Is there a known limit to the number of items aloha can download? Also, it would be better, if aloha can't handle the amount of stuff thats in your in box, if it said so rather than just making it look like there was nothing in there.
Otherwise, though, wonderful product...something we've needed for a long time...
...now if there was just one for Microsoft mail!

Hardy,
Thanks for sending me the Aloha 2.02 file. Unfortunately it did not solve all of my problems. As a reminder the problems I was having were;
1. Getting a -1 error message followed by a disconnect when trying to backup my 120 using NBU for windows (the final version not a beta).
2. When using Aloha I would get as far as "connected at 2400" (I am using the external Newton modem) when everything would freeze up. I had to restart to get things going again.
With the file you sent me problem #1 went away and I can get a good backup (only if I install Aloha on my internal storage and backup on the internal). For some reason I have something on my card that will not let me do complete package backups and I always end up with a -1 error followed by a disconnect. I am trying to figure that one out.
The second problem still exists. I can get no farther than "connected at 2400" and everything freezes. Don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
Thanks

I was having a problem when using Aloha 2.02 and trying to connect to AOL with getting stuck in the "connected at 2400" mode. Everything would freeze up and I would have to reset my 120 to get things going again. After trying several things I finally (should have done this much earlier) tried another AOL access number. It turns out this worked. Both numbers I used were SprintNet numbers. The number I was using did work on my 110 with an earlier version of Aloha. In fact it still works with my PC. Don't know what is the difference or what might have changed with the SprintNet number but if anyone is having a similar problem try a different number the very first thing. I did e-mail Hardy and let him know what I found as well.

Once the program is loaded onto the Newton, even if you get error messages from NBU/NCK the program should be OK to run.
Make sure your Network type is set correctly for the number you are connecting to. There are a lot more choices now.

-16005 is the normal timed out message. There were a lot of other error #s in previous versions that were not really time out errors.
What is happening is that your network type is not set correctly. What number are you dialing and what network do you have selected?

Reset the Newton and hold the pen a 1/4 inch from the lefthand margin in the middle of the screen. The Newton will ask if you want to activate the packages. Tap no. Once the Newton is up scrub out Aloha if it is still there. Then you can download Aloha 2.02 which fixes the bug in 2.0/2.01 that you were experiencing.

It depends a lot on AOL at the time. Sometimes AOL is nice and only sends 40 messages at a time to Aloha. In which case Aloha shouldn't have any problems downloading hundreds of messages. But, if AOL just tries to send all 100+ messages then ALoha is limited by the amount of heap memory you have available.

I was afraid that's what I would have to do. I was hoping that Aloha would be able to take advantage of the information entered in the owner site slip. I guess only the built-in eWorld software does so.
Thanks for a great product.

I believe I already e-mailed you the number and network. Just in case you didn't get it the number was (313) 326-4210 on SprintNet. I tried another local SprintNet number (313) 741-8488 and it worked as well as the 800 number you include in the readme files that come with Aloha 2.02. My e-mail also mentioned that I could only have one access number in my popup list. Any attempts to add other numbers resulted in a "Item exists in popup list. Duplicates are not allowed:. This was the case even if the number was not a duplicate.

I recently noticed that (on page 14 of late breaking news booklet, that came with my 2.0 120) that there is supposed to be a function where-in you can highlight text in a recieved e-mail, tap tag, and then tap relpy, and newton should insert that text into the reply slip.
I talked to Apple people, and they told me that this in fact should happen,
and I was wondering if it was Aloha who was the culprate (I tried starting up Newton w/o packages, but, couldn't view e-mail w/o Aloha), and if any one else has had this (extremely minor) problem.

Very neat :) The .hqx file is a binary encodedd format used for much of the internet trafficing software. If you are going to use it on the mac then use Stuffit expander to decode the package. you will then be left with the Aloha folder with a bunch of goodies inside. The files that are markes *.pkg are the packages. Read the Readme to figure out what you need to install for your system :)
